Located in the Catalonian region, Barcelona is the second largest city of Spain. It's a hybrid of languages (locals speak Catalan and Spanish), terrain (it's bordered by beaches and mountains) and architecture (modern buildings stand alongside Gothic structures). Barcelona's European and big city feel is not for students who seek the traditional flamenco-filled Spanish experience, though if they look hard enough, they will find it. Neither should its high housing and entertainment prices deter the budget-conscious, as there are various inexpensive ways to experience the city.
All they need are a metro card, a map and a sense of adventure.
See La Sagrada Familia and Other Architecture by Gaudi
Barcelona would not be Barcelona without Antoni Gaudi, the Catalan architect who helped bring about a revival of the arts in Barcelona in the late 19th century. Using nature as his muse, Gaudi created famous works including La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, Parc Guell and Casa Batllo. La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's most famous creation, is a church that has been under construction for more than 100 years, as the 74-year-old architect was struck and killed by a tram in 1926. There is a fee to enter all but Parc Guell, but fortunately for the budget-conscious, they can be admired from afar.
