The funeral took place on Wednesday 11 May 2011 for golfer Severiano Ballesteros who died of complications following a long battle with a brain tumour on Saturday 7 May 2011. At his own and his family’s request, the funeral service was held in his local parish church in the town of Pedreña in the northern province of Cantabria where the golfer had lived all his life. At one point, it had been thought that the funeral service would be moved to the cathedral in Santander so that more people could be accommodated but in the end Seve got his way and had the service he had planned for.
Simple Service
The service itself took around forty five minutes and included emotional messages from his three children, Miguel, Javier and Carmen. It was shown live on television in Spain and Britain and featured on news channels around the world. The little town, with around 1,500 inhabitants, had declared three days of official mourning following the death of Ballesteros and closed round the family to help guard their privacy from the invading eyes of the world’s media. Famous faces at the funeral included Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance as well as fellow Spaniards Miguel Ángel Jiménez and José Maria Olazabal who wore dark glasses to try and hide his grief at losing such a good friend. Also among the mourners were famous Spanish cyclist Miguel Indurain and bullfighter Enrique Ponce as well as representatives from the golfing and political sectors.
